5 day management development programme from £250

The next  five day ’21st Century Manager’ development programme, designed to help change the way we think and behave from a management and leadership perspective starts on Wed 22nd May 2013.

Suitable for strategic leaders, change managers, owner managers and professional knowledge workers it will be delivered one day per month at the Media Centre, Huddersfield HD1 1RL from May through to September/October.

In five intensive workshop sessions the programme will cover Managing Yourself, Optimising Performance, Seeking Opportunities, Managing Change and Authentic Leadership. Delivered to a group of no more than 12 using an action-learning approach, the sessions will introduce theoretical ideas, allow discussion to their relevance and application whilst at all times challenging existing attitudes and behaviours. 21st century managers using a 20th century mindset?

The 20th century saw the success of Scientific Management where ‘management’ of the work process was separated from the worker and the work itself. It became the manager’s role to determine, organise and supervise the worker and their productivity.

Given we now live and work in the ‘information age’, do these principles still hold? Should we now be embracing a new philosophy of knowledge worker engagement where they determine, organise and supervise their own tasks, outcomes and productivity?

43% of line managers are either ineffective or highly ineffective!

Only 21% of managers rate their line manager/CEO’s as highly effective according to a Feb 2012 CMI national survey across all organisational sectors, with 43% rating them as either ineffective or highly ineffective.

Retail, engineering and local government were perceived to be the worst performing sectors.

High performing organisations across all sectors were found to have higher levels of management effectiveness, spend more on appropriate management and leadership development (MLD) and employ more highly engaged employees. Continue reading →

Innovation – the critical organisational response to recession

70% of managers agree that the recession will reinforce organisations’ focus on innovation according to a survey and report by the CMI on Enhancing Innovative Working Practices.
